I enjoyed reading Playing With Fire and learning what became of Noah Behr, who first appeared Laura's book Firestorm. Arie and Noah sincerely care for each other but before they can move ahead in their relationship he needs to come to grips with his faith. Arie's family lost everything in the firestorm, yet her faith is stronger than ever. Noah is refreshing as he searches to find God and he is determined to keep searching. The resilience in this story could only be written by master story teller Laura V Hilton. If you have not read her work yet, I recommend you start now.

An Unlikely Hero

Mysteries intrigue secondhand shop owner Benuel Miller. Although strangers may think a blind man would be easy to cheat, those who know Benuel realize he’s honed his other senses to pick up clues his eyes don’t see, making him a savvy business owner. When a stranger enters Benuel’s secondhand shop, the man is shocked by Benuel’s accurate assessment and unsolicited advice. Wary, he hopes Benuel won’t find out his true intentions, but the shopkeeper is already on the case.

Later, Mari and her twin sister, Frannie, stop in Benuel’s shop with Frannie’s three-year-old son, and Benuel senses trouble. His hunches have never led him astray, but is he misreading something here? He can’t help being drawn to Mari, yet is she as sweet and loving as she seems? Or is she hiding a deep, dark secret?

One explosive night when tragedy strikes, Benuel risks his life to find out the truth. Can he unmask the stranger from his shop to foil a sinister plot? And will what he discovers destroy his only chance for love?

...my thoughts on Unlikely Hero...

This is an intriguing mystery that kept me turning pages one night until I came to the end! Benuel Miller is blind but bears a special insight that enables him to read a lot into the characters of customers who enter his store. While he is not your every day hero, he quickly sizes up the situation between Mari and Frannie and knows things just don't add up. I enjoyed this novella by Rachel j Good, an author who finds the most intriguing real life subjects for her books.

Racing the Slow Girls
A recipe for fast-paced, comical, Amish adventure— Ingredients: Three fun-loving teenage boys on bicycles. Mix in an adorable little girl on a pony, a few spunky teenage girls, and a hint of romance. Directions: Place the characters in a beautiful setting, such as Holmes Co. Ohio. Roll in the boys on bikes. Stir up a few harsh words spoken carelessly. Add plenty of retaliation by the girls. Place in the heat of a family emergency until everyone is completely undone. Sit back and enjoy an Amish adventure with a cup of coffee.

...my thoughts on Racing the Slow Girls...

I enjoyed reading about Daniel and Libby, an unlikely friendship developed through his simple acts of kindness toward her. Libby was an engaging child who seemed to make him late when he was meeting friends for fun and games. Daniel had two identities and when the truth comes out in an all important event to help out his young friend, the results are a nice finish to a game of mistaken identity.

Arie’s habanero chili

1 lb stew meat: venison, or beef

1/4 cup bacon bits

1/2 Onion, diced

Green pepper, diced

2 cans of habanero Rotel

1 can tomato sauce

1 can kidney beans

1 can pinto beans

1/2 cup sliced jalapenos

1 TSP cayenne pepper

3 TB chili powder

2 TB beef bouillon

1 TSP paprika

1 TSP pepper

2 TB garlic

salt to taste

Saute onion and pepper, set aside. Sear stew meat in hot pan until brown. Do not over cook. Add meat and other ingredients to pot and simmer until done. Add water if necessary. Serve with cornbread. Approximately 7 servings

my thoughts....

Ada Rupp is much more than just a gifted teacher...she also has a special gift caring for her seven brothers and sisters, one of whom has special needs. She runs a tight household that is organized in just such a way that the siblings work together in harmony. Ada grew up quickly during her mother's illness and single-handedly raised her siblings when her father could no longer live in their home. She is such a dutiful young woman, whose priority was seeing to the needs of others.

Josiah has the capacity to love his son but is at a loss as he looks on as Nathan bonds with Ada. His heart wrenching pain pours out of the pages. I can't imagine the loss he suffered losing a wife he loved coupled with the love and patience he had for his son. It was through this love and the knowledge of Ada's gift as a teacher that led him to discover how to reach Nathan. His tireless strength fueled by his deep faith allowed him to give back to the school. In the long run the lessons he learned were immeasurable.

As I read the story I was struck by the very real the difficulties Ada and Josiah faced. The characters Rachel J. Good created in this book are very well developed and the research was amazing. I recommend this book for anyone who loves Amish fiction but all the more so for someone looking to go just a little deeper into situations that test our faith and unconditional love.

Heart-Tugging Research

Sometimes as an author, stories call to you and beg you to write them. This story first tugged at my heart after I spent time with an Amish friend’s special needs child. I thought about writing a book to show how the Amish treat each child as a gift from God. After meeting a hearing-impaired teen girl with Down’s syndrome and seeing how she was encouraged to live up to her potential, the idea grew stronger. This girl later became Martha in the book.

Then at an auction, I watched a young Down’s syndrome boy help the auctioneer by delivering the goods to the bidders. His straw hat tilted a little crookedly, but with a broad smile on his face, he carefully matched items with the correct bidder. He looked so proud of himself and proud to be able to do such an important job. I sat there at the auction and jotted notes for the novel.

Once I knew the topic of the novel, I began my research by visiting Amish schools for special needs, attending auctions to support them, and touring the Community Care Center, where Amish and Mennonite children and adults with special needs get amazing help. The young man in the wheelchair who showed us around was an awesome guide. We peeked into an exercise room, a therapy room, a craft room, several classrooms, a cafeteria, and my favorite—a multi-sensory environment. This room with dark walls lit only by a small row of twinkling Christmas lights had a ball pit (with the plastic balls like some fast food restaurants have in their play areas), a plush recliner, blankets, headphones, and a hammock. Autistic children at the center found this room a great calming atmosphere. I knew this room had to have a place in the book.

I visited a teacher who taught autistic children and learned a lot about programs, therapies, and teaching techniques. After learning the cutting edge techniques she used, I was surprised to realize that the Amish had adopted quite a few of them for their classrooms. I chose a hearing-impaired boy for the hero’s son because I had a nephew with hearing problems, so I could incorporate some of the struggles he had into the story.

I wanted this series to be about the healing power of love, so each book will deal with a different type of healing. When something touches my heart like this, I always pray it will touch the readers’ hearts too.

Will the contrast between Monroe’s and Rosemary’s families end their relationship for good? Rosemary’s grandpa tries to offer words of wisdom, but people don’t take him seriously. My thoughts....

Gingerbread Wishes is a sweet romance, giving the reader another look at characters introduced in The Christmas Admirer,
a book I recently read. Becca Troyer and Yost Miller are a younger couple, silently admiring each other. the previous Christmas, Becca tried the popular Gingerbread love potion on Yost to get his attention but it didn't seem to work. Shy Yost couldn't seem to get his courage up to ask her out but wearing a disguise he was able to pluck up the courage to let his feelings be known. I enjoyed this story. It is hard to let others see us as we truly are. It takes courage to know that they do want to know us as we are instead of how we think they do.

Thanksgiving Strangers is a story of hidden identity, unconditional love and forgiveness. I enjoyed this story for the depth of character displayed of the characters in a novella. Faithe Beiler and Crist Petersheim both had inner struggles yet the masks they wore were effective costumes. She was always positive and it was her unwavering faith in God that she could be so accepting and generous to others. Crist's outward appearance allowed him to keep others at bay. While this was effective for his work, it also hid the hurt he kept buried in his heart. The author uncovered many layers to get to the heart of these characters. I will be looking for more of Rachel J. Good's books for my reader.

The Thanksgiving Frolic by Thomas Nye is a story of pride, humility and the wisdom to be quiet and listen. While this story is about a young courting couple, I was intrigued by Monroe's father. He was a difficult man who was hard to please yet his son loved him enough to help him when he needed it the most. It was his change of heart that inspired me the most in this well written story.

Gratitude and love for fellow man are wonderful ingredients for Thanksgiving. I recommend this heartwarming novella collection for anyone who enjoys Amish fiction. I appreciate the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
